America: Prospering, or Disaster?

When browsing the comments section on YouTube, a comment that frequently pops up is something like, “You Americans are so dumb!” or “What an uneducated statement to make. You must be American.” These are typically comments from foreigners, but sometimes there are comments by Americans about how dumb Americans are. World opinions have been gradually decreasing since the late 90’s, as evidenced by this article:

This is, unfortunately, not without reason. According to TheDailyBeast, 1,000 Americans were given the citizenship test- and an astounding 38% failed. Some sample questions from the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) are:

How many states are in the union?

Can you name the 13 original states?

Who said “Give me liberty or give me death!”

To which the answers are: 50, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Rhode Island, and Maryland, and Patrick Henry.

It’s not just our education that’s looked down upon. How we interact with the world, our policies, and attitude are also mocked. One thing that stands out is the world’s view on our dealings with Iraq. 75% of the world disagrees with this. 19% approve. It doesn’t say about the remaining 6%, but I assume that they feel conflicted or undecided.

What is your opinion on America? Prospering Nation, or National Disaster? Let me know in the comments.
